Doorways Dance

Doorways is our inclusive dance class designed specifically for teenagers and adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Every session is tailored to celebrate each individual's strengths, encouraging students to express themselves through movement in a welcoming, supportive and accessible environment.

Our classes focus on building confidence, creativity and social skills whilst promoting physical wellbeing through dance. There is no pressure to be perfect; every achievement is celebrated, and every student is encouraged to participate in a way that works best for them.

Throughout the year, students enjoy exploring different dance styles and songs, with opportunities to perform in showcases, performances and community events for those who wish to take part.

Whether dancing independently or with support, Doorways is all about making dance accessible, enjoyable and empowering for everyone.

What happens at a weekly Doorways class?

Each class is led by expierenced teacher Alice with the help of three friendly classroom assistants on hand to help encourage and demonstrate moves. Everyone is included and we offer a range of move options so that students can partipicate in a way that suits them. Students can also attend with their carers if they wish. 

We follow a structure each week so students know what to expect from the Dance class. We start with a sharing circle, Dance warm up led by the teacher, Dance warmup led by the students. Then we  learn or recap a dance routine. We usually work on a song for 4/5 weeks, sometimes longer if we are preparing for a show. After we have practiced our dance routine we then have a disco where students suggest songs and we all just have a boogie! This is then followed by a cool down stretch routine led by the staff.
